8 Precautions To Take After Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is one of the most common dental practices that is performed when a tooth cannot be restored. The procedure carried out by dentists and periodontists is as part of their core skills. The tooth is forced to leave the socket or dental alveolus and so the procedure can be painful. Thus, experts make sure that the area is completely numb before extracting the tooth.

Few major reasons for practising Fairfield tooth extraction.
  • To eliminate teeth overcrowding
  • Extraction may help with an impacted tooth
  • Irreparable tooth damage due to severe decay
  • A viable solution to periodontal disease
  • Necessary after an accident

Though an experienced and proficient dentist makes sure that the tooth extraction procedure is as painless as possible, here are few aftercares for tooth extraction that you need to keep in mind for a speedy recovery:

  • First and foremost important thing is to take painkillers.
  • You need to avoid blood clotting in tooth socket and to prevent this, bite firmly but gently on the gauze placed by your dentist.
  • Once the procedure is performed, immediately apply an ice bag on the affected area to prevent swelling. Maintain a gap of 10 minutes after the first ice bag.
  • For the next 24 hours you need to avoid rinsing or spitting forcefully. This will also help in avoiding dislodging the clot that forms in the socket.
  • It is quite effective to rinse your mouth with a solution made with 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 8 ounces of warm water but only after 24 hours.
  • Also, if possible postpone your activities for the next day or two and just relax for at least 24 hours after tooth extraction.
  • There is no need to drink from a straw for 24 hours and avoid smoking as it inhibits healing.
  • You can take soup, pudding, yogurt or other soft food to eat after tooth extraction. And once you are healed, you can add solid food in your diet.

These are few after procedure precautions that you can take for speedy recovery, including the ones specially suggested by your dentist in your case.

  1. Tooth loss is not uncommon in today's world. Some people lose periodontics & dental implants due to genetics, others due to accidents and still others due to poor dental hygiene. However, just because one loses teeth does not mean that he or she has to live a life with missing teeth or a life with dentures.
